High School Principal's Message
Dear Parents,
I would like to welcome everyone back and hope that everyone had a safe, joyous holiday and a happy new year. The first semester has come and gone faster than we wanted it to. The second semester will go just as fast with all the activities ahead of us this semester. Our students have been very busy with all the extra curricular activities that they have going on within the school district. This will be a very busy semester for seniors as they prepare for graduation as well as planning for their future. Seniors and senior parents stay on top of scholarship and scholarship due dates. Also, be sure to have your child check their school email regularly for scholarship applications.
Sequoyah believes in meeting and keeping high expectations for our students. Sequoyah’s teachers and staff will continuously strive to meet those high expectations, but our most important mission is to create the lifelong love of learning and preparing our students to be “college and career ready.” If we continue to instill these qualities into our students then the rest will take care of itself.
Seniors and Senior parents stay on top of scholarship and scholarship due dates. Seniors please make sure that you are checking your emails for graduation updates as well as any other important senior information that comes up. We will also get as much information out through the High School Facebook page as well.
Parents please take advantage of the opportunity to monitor your child’s grades and attendance through our student grade book program/parent portal. There will always be a direct correlation between poor grades and poor attendance in the classroom. You may contact Jennifer Bacon at the High School to get access to your password. If you have not please like and join the High School Facebook page so that you can be up to date on what is happening at the High School. If at any time you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us at the High School 918-341-0642.
The Oklahoma State Department of Education is revamping its accountability system, specifically with CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM. This indicator will affect the school’s A-F Report Card fairly dramatically. CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year and will be calculated based on students enrolled on or before January 2nd. For example if the school year is 180 days, the school will be docked points if a student is absent more than 18 days (10%) that year for any reason. CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM is worth 10 points (11%) of the A-F report Card. Schools will receive scores based on the number of students that are enrolled that are not CHRONICALLY absent. Although participation in school activities is not an absence, CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM generally will be measured on whether or not the student is present- regardless of whether the absence is excused or unexcused. For the 2022-2023 school year, attendance will be monitored even more closely than in years past. Students may be subject to consequences for CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM and families may even be turned into Truancy court. It is important that we as a school district and parents work together and be proactive about CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM. Remember there is always a direct correlation between attendance and grades.
If a student goes over the amount of days allowed (9 per semester) in a semester or school year they will be assigned a Tuesday night school to make up for the lost classroom/seat time that was lost. We will also be monitoring students' grades. If a student is on the eligibility list for 4 consecutive weeks I will have a meeting with that student and the parent will be contacted during that meeting. A letter for the parent to sign will be sent home that day for them to sign as well. The student will then be assigned an academic Tuesday night school so that they have the extra time and resources to get caught back up in the subject areas that they are behind in. We have had great success with this over the last 5 years in being able to help students get back on track in the classroom and get their grades up.
